India on Friday said that a technical malfunction led to accidental firing of a missile into Pakistan and the incident is "deeply regretted".
"On 9 March 2022, in the course of routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile. The Government of India has taken a serious view and ordered a high-level Court of Enquiry," the defence ministry said in a statement, reports Times of India.
It added that the missile landed in an area of Pakistan and the incident is "deeply regrettable". The ministry said it is a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident.
Earlier, Pakistan had summoned India's Charge d'Affaires and conveyed its strong protest over what it described as an "unprovoked violation of its airspace by an Indian-origin "super-sonic flying object".
