Indian Chief of Defence Staff Rawat killed in crash

India’s foremost military officer, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Bipin Rawat, was killed in a chopper crash near Ooty on Wednesday. According to the Air Force, Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 other persons died.
Union defence minister Rajnath Singh is likely to give a statement on the accident in Parliament tomorrow. Sources said that at least three injured from the crash have been taken to hospital.
There were nine people on board, apart from the crew. According to sources, Rawat’s staff and some family members were also on board the Mi-series helicopter. The helicopter belonged to the 109 Helicopter Unit based at the Sulur airbase near Coimbatore.
It was a Mi-17 V5 variant, one of the latest versions of military transport helicopter available around the world.
