HC upholds MP Harun’s 5-year jail term

The High Court on Thursday upheld five-year jail term for Member of Parliament (MP) Harunur Rashid in a corruption case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
An HC bench of M. Selim passed the order after MP Harun made appeal against the judgement of the lower court.
On October 21, the court awarded to five years in prison and fined Tk 50 lakh to BNP leader Harunur Rashid in the case filed by the ACC over importing duty-free cars and embezzling money by selling those.
Two others accused in the case are former NTV managing director Enayetur Rahman Bappi and Sky Autos owner Ishtiak Sadek.
Enayetur was sentenced to two years in jail and fined Tk 100,000 while car importer Ishtiak Sadek was sentenced to three years in jail and Tk 40 lakh in fines.
The case was filed with Tejgaon police station against three people including Harunur Rashid for importing duty-free cars and embezzling money by selling those while he was MP on March 17 in 2007.
On July 18 in 2007, ACC assistant director Monayem Hossain submitted the charge sheet implicating three including Harun-ur Rashid after investigating the case.
On August 20, 2007, the court started the trial.
