10 BNP men jailed in cocktail blast case

A Dhaka court on Monday awarded five-year rigorous imprisonment to 10 leaders and activists of BNP in a case filed over blasting cocktails in the capital's Bhashantek area in 2013.

Judge Amirul Islam of Dhaka 9th Special Tribunal pronounced the judgement in the morning, also fined the convicts Tk 5,000 each, to suffer three-months more behind the bars in default.

The 10 convicts are Suman Chandra, Jasim, Aminul, Sohel, Kauser, Jewel, Abdur Rahman, Shahid, Mohsin and Liton. The court also acquitted 14 more from the case.

Prosecutor Obaidul Haque said the convicts blasted cocktails at Bhashantek intersection in the capital, during the BNP-led alliance's hartal on November 26, 2013.

Bhashantek Police Station sub-inspector Jahidul Islam filed the case.

Investigative officer and Bhashantek Police Station sub-inspector ABM Asaduzzaman filed charge-sheet in the case on March 31, 2014.

A total of 10 prosecution witnesses were examined by the court on different dates, while four defence witnesses testified for the accused.
