A man was killed and 12 others injuried on Saturday during a clash between supporters of two member candidates of Pingna UP election in Sarishabari upazila of Jamalpur.

The deceased was identified as Bhola Sheikh,60,of Kajla village in Kazipur upazila in Sirajganj.

According to witnesses, a clash between supporters of Nurul Islam and Sujat Ali, member candidates of ward-3 of the UP, started around 10 am over campaigning near Fazlu member’s house at Paschim Nalchanda village in Pingna union. Sujat Ali’s supporters obstructed the election campaign of Nurul Islam in the area, claimed Nurul Islam’s supporters.

In the hour-long clash Bhola Sheikh died on the spot as the opponent group hit him on his head, said his wife Laily Sheikh. Injured in the incident Abdul Halim, 59, Tutul, 50, and Shukkur, 49, were admitted at Sarishabari Upazila Health Complex while other injured received primary medications.

Mir Rakibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sarishabari police station, said the body was recovered from the spot and sent for the autopsy. Pingna UP election is set to be held on 31 January.
