Those who have had special privileges and benefits during previous governments should not be appointed to the Election Commission (EC).
They told the media this at the Supreme Court Judges Lounge at 1:15pm on Saturday after a meeting with the search committee constituted for nominating the names for forming the next EC.
It was the first meeting of the search committee with the country's eminent citizens.
Professor Mahfuza Khanam, president of the Bangladesh Asiatic Society, said, those whose names will be sent to the president by the search committee for the EC formation must be pro-liberation.
She added: “They could be from any field. Whether he is a government bureaucrat or a professional in another field--we will know their personal character and honesty from their long lives.”
Ali Imam Majumder, a former cabinet secretary, said, “Whether it is the current government or the previous party government, any privileged person should not get a place in the Election Commission. This claim has been supported by many others.”
