Mayor Abbas Ali of Rajshahi's Katakhali Municipality has been detained by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from a Dhaka hotel on Wednesday morning.
ASP Imran Khan, assistant director (legal and media wing), at RAB Headquarters confirmed the news.
He said a team of RAB raided Dhaka’s Razmoni Ishakha hotel and detained Abbas in the morning.
Earlier a case was filed against him under the Digital Security Act (DSA) over his alleged derogatory remarks on Bangabandhu and announcement to stop the construction of a mural of the national hero in Rajshahi.
Abdul Momin, councillor of ward no 13 of Katakhali Municipality, lodged the complaint against Abbas.
Mayor Abbas face music after an audio clip of his remarks on Bangabandhu went viral on social media recently.
He said: “The contractor has submitted a design of Bangabandhu's mural to be installed at the Katakhali city gate. But it would be a sin if I allow it as it is not allowed in the Islamic Shariah laws."
