A Dhaka court on Wednesday awarded death penalty to 20 people and life term imprisonment to five others for the 2019 murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad, who was beaten to death by Chhatra League activists.

Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 Judge Abu Zafar M Kamruzzaman handed down the verdict.

While delivering the verdict, the court said the offenders have been handed down the highest punishment with a view to stop the repetition of such brutal murders.

A total of 25 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League were the accused in the case. Of them 22 were present before the court during the verdict.

On October 6, 2019, BUET Sher-e-Bangla Hall resident Abrar criticised the government over a water-sharing deal with India on Facebook. He was subsequently taken to the room of a BCL leader on the night and was tortured to death.
