Outgoing Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Doraiswami said that India is with Bangladesh, not a specific person.
He said this after paying tribute to the martyrs at Savar National Memorial on the last day of his duty as High Commissioner on Saturday (September 17).
He said, this is not the place to talk about politics. But I am saying on the last day of my duty, India has always stood by Bangladesh. Stands by the people of Bangladesh. We want to see the people of Bangladesh happy. We want the development of the people of this country, at the same time we want to see a successful democracy in Bangladesh.
The Indian diplomat said that the government will work for the country and not for any individual. We are also not on the side of any particular person. We are on the side of Bangladesh, on the side of the people of this country.
Doraiswami said, "The relationship (Bangladesh-India) is strong….we will always stand with Bangladesh and the people of Bangladesh,” he said on his last day in Bangladesh.
Doraiswami visited the memorial and paid tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Liberation War of 1971. He observed a minute-long silence and signed the visitors’ book there after placing the wreath.
Doraiswami, who has been appointed as High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom, is scheduled to leave Bangladesh tomorrow.
