Eight workers have died after a sand carrying dredger sank in the Sandwip channel of the Bay of Bengal in Mirsharai of Chattogram on Tuesday morning.

Six of the dead workers have been identified. They are Imam Molla, Mahmud Molla, Shaheen Molla, Al Amin, Mo Tarek and Bashar. The identity of the other two is not known.

Salam, the only one worker of the dredger who managed to swim ashore. He confirmed that the dead workers were residents of Jainkathi area of ​​Patuakhali Sadar Upazila.

The dredger is owned by a contract firm named Saikat Enterprises. The Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (Bepza) appointed the contract at the specialised industrial park.

Abdullah Harun Pasha, Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service, said that a dredger carrying sand sank in the Bay of Bengal. We have conducted an operation to rescue the missing workers. Among them, the bodies of 8 workers were recovered from Tuesday morning to afternoon. The dredger initially appears to have sunk due to rough seas caused by Cyclone Sitrang and high tides, he added.
