As reports of gas smells emerge, energy ministry urges Dhaka residents not to panic

The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has urged people not to panic over reports of “gas smells” in several Dhaka areas.
Residents of several areas including Moghbazar, Badda, Bashabo, Dhanmondi and Hazaribagh have reported gas smells on the streets.
In a Facebook post on its verified page earlier today, the energy ministry said that due to gas not being supplied to factories during Eid, gas pressure in transmission and distribution lines has increased which has caused an “overflow” and the smell.
It also said that emergency and technical teams of Titas Gas are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
“City residents are advised not to panic,” the ministry said the Facebook post, giving Titas Gas Hotline: 16496.
Meanwhile, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, in his Facebook post, said that reports of gas smells in several areas have raised concern among people.
“I would urge city dwellers not to panic,” he said, adding that Titas Gas has already taken necessary steps. “The situation is under control,” he wrote.
