Opportunities will be given if criminals wish to return to normal life: IGP

Claiming that the Sundarbans is freed from pirates, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on Wednesday said opportunities will be given once any criminal wants to return to right track.

“We have been working in line with the Prime Minister’s zero tolerance policy against militancy and terrorism,” he said.

He said that the Sundarbans pirates have surrendered, and following that example opportunities will be given if any criminal wants to come back on the right track.

The IGP made the statement while briefing journalists at the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday afternoon.

“We declared the Sundarbans free from pirates because of their surrender. We continue watching whether the pirates are getting involved in crimes after their surrender,” he said.

Mamun said any attempt to break the law and order situation in the country will be dealt with properly.

Regarding the recent recovery of 10 bodies from a floating fishing trawler in the district, the IGP said he instantly ordered Deputy Inspector General (DIG) to look into the matter and sent a team of Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

“Some accused have already been detained and they gave confessional statements…while the investigation is also going on,” the IGP said.

Urging people to call the national emergency service 999, the police boss also said that no one will be spared in connection with the recent recovery of the bodies in Cox’s Bazar.
