Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandkar Golam Faruq said health remains sound if the surrounding environment is healthy.
"Protecting the environment as well as maintaining good health is necessary. There are two benefits of cycling. The first one is a healthy environment and the second one is good health," he said while inaugurating an environment-friendly cycle rally at Hatirjheel here today.
On the occasion of the UN Global Road Safety Week 2023, BRAC organised a cycle rally.
Mentioning that there are no separate roads for bicycles, he said, "Those who are designing townships need to make cities which are bicycle-friendly. There should be separate lanes for bicycles on the road because cycles do not pollute the environment."
The DMP Commissioner said there is severe environmental pollution due to movement of vehicles in the capital, which is almost six times more than the capacity.
Mentioning the current environmental conditions in the city, Faruq said, "Our traffic police are standing on the road all day long to control the traffic system. They are suffering from various diseases due to environmental pollution. If we create environments for cycling, we can avoid these health and environmental pollution hazards."
Later, a colourful rally of cyclists paraded through Hatirjheel's Police Plaza, Madhubagh Bridge and ended up next to the Amphitheatre.
