BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said that BNP wants to say very clearly that the government is misusing the digital security act to protect itself from the public's wrath. Such unjustified act of the state must be stopped right now.
He came up with this warning while addressing a press conference held at party Chairperson Khaleda Zia's Gulshan office in Dhaka this afternoon.
The press conference was held to announce the decisions taken in the virtual meeting of the party's policy-making board standing committee held under the chairmanship of BNP acting chairman Tariq Rahman last Monday.
Mirza Fakhrul said that in the meeting of the standing committee it was decided to build public opinion against the restrictive law Digital Security Act.
The meeting strongly condemned and protested the deprivation of freedom of expression of the people, deprivation of media freedom, cases against journalists and citizens, arrests and torture by applying the Digital Security Act.
Citing the arrests, Fakhrul said the government is engaged in using the digital security act to torture and harass people deliberately.
The government blatantly misused the law by arresting photojournalist Shafiqul Islam Kajol on World Press Freedom Day, the BNP leader said.
The Standing Committee demanded immediate repeal of this Digital Security Act.
