Former Australia cricketer and two-time World Cup winner Andrew Symonds died in a car crash on Saturday night. He was 46.
The 46-year-old was the sole passenger in the crash just outside of Townsville in his home state of Queensland, police confirmed.
“Early information indicates, shortly after 11pm the car was being driven on Hervey Range Road, near Alice River Bridge when it left the roadway and rolled,” the police statement confirmed.
“Emergency services attempted to revive the 46-year-old driver and sole occupant, however, he died of his injuries.
He was a big-hitting allrounder who built a credible test career and was an exemplar of Australian sport’s prized larrikin tradition.
“Australian cricket has lost another of its very best. Andrew was a generational talent who was instrumental in Australia’s success at World Cups and as part of Queensland’s rich cricket history,” Cricket Australia chairman Lachlan Henderson said in a statement Sunday. “He was a cult figure to many (and) was treasured by his fans and friends.”
