Sri Lanka are trailing by 222 runs at the end of day two of Dhaka Test against Bangladesh on Tuesday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
The visitors were batting at 143 for two in 46 overs with Dimuth Karunaratne batting at 70 and the nightwatchman Kasun Rajitha remaining not out for zero.
In reply to Bangladesh’s first inning total of 365, Sri Lanka made a good start as both the openers— Oshada Fernando and Karunaratne— hit a fifty each. Oshada was going well but a wonderful catch at the slip by Najmul Hossain Shanto sent him back. Ebadot Hossain got the first wicket.
Kusal Mendis was removed by Shakib Al Hasan for 11. It was a straight delivery from Shakib. After the ball hit his pads, Kusal did not even bother to call for a review. He just started to walk off the field, reports UNB.
Earlier, Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das guided the hosts to a moderate total of 365 despite losing ample of wickets in the first hour of day one.
Rajitha and Asitha Fernando went through the Bangladesh batting line and the hosts lost five wickets under 25 runs. From there, Mushfiqur and Liton propelled them to 365. Six Bangladeshi batters suffered a duck each.
Along the way, Bangladesh’s innings became the first instance of scoring this many runs after so many batters went back with a duck. And Mushfiqur became the most-run getter in an innings that saw more than half batters failing to score even a single run.
For Sri Lanka, Rajitha was the workhorse registering his maiden five-wicket haul in the format. Asitha also took four wickets.
If this Test produces a result, the winners will end up winning the series as the first Test in Chattogram ended in a draw.
This series is part of the ICC World Test Championship. Bangladesh played seven matches in this event and won only one of them.
