India on Monday recorded a sharp rise in daily Covid-19 cases, stoking fears of a fourth wave of the virus.
The number–2,183–is an 89.8 percent jump from the Sunday’s case count of 1,150, reports our New Delhi correspondent. The 2,183 cases in the last 24 hours took the total tally of the infections to 4,30,44,280 while active cases declined to 11,542, according to the data of Indian Health Ministry.
Some 214 deaths have been recorded over the past 24 hours. This, however, includes a backlog of 212 deaths from the southern state of Kerala, which was the worst-hit by the pandemic.
The daily positivity rate, which points to the spread of the infection in the population, has gone up to 0.83 percent today from 0.31 percent on Monday.
The active cases comprise 0.03 percent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate remained at 98.76 percent, the ministry said.
