Panchagarh boat capsize leaves 24 dead

At least 24 people, including women and children, drowned and 50 went missing as boat capsized in Karatoya River in Boda upazila of Panchagarh district on Sunday.

The accident took place in the afternoon in Auliar Ghat area under Marea Union Parishad in the upazila. The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Panchagarh Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shafiqul Islam said that 24 bodies have been recovered so far. More than half a hundred are still missing. An operation is underway to rescue them. The death toll may rise further, he said.

According to police and local sources, the victims were crossing the river through Auliar Ghat area of ​​Madea Bamanhat Union of Panchagarh on the occasion of the auspicious Mahalaya at Badeshwari Temple in Barashashi Union of Boda Upazila of Panchagarh to join the Puja Archjana. Later the boat sank in the middle of the river. The boat carrying 60-70 passengers including women and children.

Deputy Commissioner of Panchagarh Zahurul Islam said that Police and fire service members are doing to rescue work.
