Verdict in Abrar murder case rescheduled

A Dhaka tribunal has set December 8 for delivering verdict in Buet student Abrar Fahad murder case.

Judge Abu Zafar Md Kamruzzaman of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka came up with the new date. While setting the new verdict date, the judge said he needs to hear more arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.

On November 14, the Dhaka tribunal set November 28 for delivering the verdict in the murder case filed in October 2019.

Earlier this morning, 22 accused out of 25 were taken to court while three accused--Mustaba, Jishan and Tanim are absconding, says Court Inspector and in-charge of the court prison Md Abdul Hakim.

The tribunal has recorded statements of 46 prosecution witnesses so far, including complainant of the case.

Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), died after he was brutally beaten allegedly by some Chhatra League activists at Sher-e-Bangla hall of the university on October 7, 2019.

Later, his father filed the case with Chawkbazar Police Station against 19 Buet BCL leaders and activists.

On November 13, 2019, Inspector Md Wahiduzaman of Detective Branch submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka against 25 Buet students as eight of the accused gave confessional statements to magistrates on different dates.

On September 15 in 2020, the tribunal framed charges against the accused.
