BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is now free as she is not in custody of the government, says Law Minister Anisul Huq.

The minister came up with the remarks while expressing his reaction to a remarks of Parliament member Rumeen Farhana.

During today’s parliament session, Rumeen said: “Khaleda Zia still remains in custody of the government and the government will be responsible If anything happens to her.”

In reply, the law minister said: “Khaleda is definitely free. She is not in the government's custody. She can receive medical treatment anywhere in the country as per her wish.”

Earlier, the law minister said in this regard that Khaleda Zia would have to go to jail in order to get permission to go abroad as there is no scope to reconsider a decided case in the same provision (section 401) of the Criminal Code of Procedures.

Referring to the minister’s comment, Rumeen said there is nothing like this in section 401 of the Criminal Code of Procedures.

Another BNP MP Mosharof Hosen sought that the government can declare her residence as sub-jail and allow her to go abroad.

In his reply, the law minister said he still stands by what he said in this regard.

Anisul further said Khaleda Zia was freed on humanitarian grounds and the government would consider whether she will be allowed to go abroad.
